JJ Cruisers Mother/Daughter 1st 51:00 Wild n’ Wet in Woolley by Tom Dorman The rain beat the earth as if God and all the countless angels had just finished washing their cars and were simultaneously squeezing out all their heavenly sponges and chamois. In the midst of this deluge, there were few sounds other than the pounding of the rain . . . and the occasional call of the only wildlife brave enough to leave the shelter of den and tree and house: "On your left!" "One more minute--push it now!" "Where's my bicyclist?!" "Why'd I wear these dang sweatpants?" Two miles out on the course, in a puddle—as what wasn't?—leaning against a fence, was an unattended bike, awaiting a runner. Hunched over next to the bike, rain exploding off his back, was a saboteur; he shifted the gears to their highest setting, climbed on his own bike, smiled at his partner who came running up behind him, and together they splashed their way on down The Path of Despair. The race director had warned them: "we cannot be responsible for the security of unattended bicycles." On Saturday, 16 April 2005, Shellane Jensen carried out her senior project required for her high school graduation: she planned and put on the First Annual Wild n’ Woolley Ride and Run 10K. The ubiquitous and speedy Dean Taylor was her mentor. The race was held on an out-and-back course on the CascadeTrail—""Rails-to-Trails"/"Path of Despair”/”County Corridor of Corruption"—east of Sedro-Woolley. Each team of two runners brought a bicycle, a few bucks for the entry fee, a sense of rainy adventure, and maybe even a strategy (though most strategies seemed to involve various colorful four-letter metaphors, a dubious capacity for bike maintenance—the tires need air?—and a hope that the other team member would have a good running day). The idea for the race was based on the old Pony Express Ride and Tie: in other words, what do we do if there are two of us and one horse, and we want to move as quickly as possible without tiring the horse? So, on Saturday one team member ran while the other bicycled by his side, moving ahead to drop the bike and start running. In this strange sort of leap-frog fashion, the Wild n’ Woolley Ride and Race 10k entrants ran/biked through ten kilometers of pleasant morning rain. 18 teams braved the elements: Scott Carie and Alex Swanson paired up as “Who Let the Dogs Out” and were the winners of this initial race with a time of 34:51 The were followed by Clay Wing and Carvin Kramer in a time of 35:27 Representing Bellingham were two teams: Ed and Kathleen Harri were the winners of the Spouse division with a time of 39:20 just nosing out the Co-Ed High School pairing of Ryan Huerter and Melissa Bradley at 39:21. While the father son team from RunningShoes.com place third with a time of 42:58. An epic battle took place between the Twin Turbo Taylors (Nik and Dean)and the Bakke Boys (Doug and Bobby) in the father-son division with the Turbo anchor finishing in 40:47 while the Bakke Boys finished 40:53. The Bakkes attributed their loss to Doug's tired legs. Apparently, about two miles into the race, he leaped on the bike his son had left leaning on a fence, and something went wrong with the gears; he ended up trying to catch up starting in his tallest gear. Team Boondoggle dominated the 14 and under division.(of course no other team entered) Richard Weyrich and Kevin Bartelt finished in a respectable time of 41:57. Grateful Dred members: Ruth and Andrew Taylor dominated the mother/son division with a time of 44:13 although we are still awaiting word from the national ride and tie organization on one of their clever but questionable moves during the race……… Tom Dorman and Dallas Trople of Path of Despair Athletic Club and Becky Goodell and David Young of Fine and Pleasant Misery represented the faculty of Sedro-Woolley High School well with wins in the Over 30 Master’s Open (44:03) and Co-Ed divisions (47:41). Ron and Kim Betz of Place Your Betz was the winner of the Skagit Runners Spouse Divison with a time of 50:12 while the mother daughter team of Jane Monroe and Jeannie Wright finished first in 51:00.
